Week 6

 Weekly Greetings!

The beautiful fall weather just keeps on staying! Hopefully, we will have a clear day for our field trip to Deadman Lake on Wednesday. I still need some permission slips returned, and will be sending another copy with those students with their homework. Please look for it and return it by Tuesday. If students cannot go, I will have to make a plan and leave work for them to do for the day.

Some students are asking to bring electronics on the trip, and don't think it is a good idea for a couple of reasons. First, I cannot be monitoring what they are doing on the electronics, as I will be driving. In addition, we will be in two vans and a Tetlin Refuge staff person will be drive one so I will not be able to monitor that van. There will be aides in both vans, but with such a large group it is hard to  monitor what is on the electronics in the back of the van.The trip will be over an hour each way, and I would feel better if they brought a CD for music to be played in the van, view the beautiful scenery, read a book, or draw in a notepad instead.

Thursday we will also participate in a special program through AK Teach.  We will join scientists working with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on a webcast to learn about the importance of fresh water. This will also tie in nicely to our ecosystems unit, and a poster contest we will be participating in.

The Tok calendar that was sent out before school started this year shows another early release day this Friday. Unless something has changes, the students should be out of school that day at 1:45pm. If there has been a change, and we end up with a full day, I will send a special note home by mid-week.

As for a few snapshots from last week, the class was able to plant birch trees with some staff from the Forestry Service last Wednesday. The outing fit in perfectly with the ecosystems unit we were starting last week. The students worked in small groups to plant and water at least one tree. It was a lovely activity, and we were thankful that the foresters made time to work with all the students at the Tok School.

I hope you all have a wonderful week!

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown
