Week 16

Weekly Greetings!

The three days of MAP testing went well last week, but there are still couple students that will need to make up one test due to being absent. Now there is just three weeks left before the end of the first semester and our Christmas break. I know it will go by really fast. This week we will move back into a regular routine, other than an assembly on Tuesday morning for the November students of the month at 8:30am. There will also be an early out on Friday, and students will be released at 1:45pm.

Now for some highlights from last week. Between the testing, we still continued in our regular reading, social studies, and math curriculum.  Students have been working on learning their math facts on a computer program daily, in addition to working on filling gaps through the Redbird math program.
If students have completed all their daily assignments, then they have time at the end of the day for some activity choices during our Enrichment period.
Also, we completed our science unit on matter and looked at more chemical changes when adding a solid to a liquid. On Thursday, the students made a substance I call "Flubber" that is like silly putty.
Then on Friday, the students used their energy to turn heavy cream, vanilla, and sugar into ice cream using two special ice cream balls. The outer edge of the balls had ice and rock salt, and there was a cylinder in the center of the balls with the cream mixture. After rolling the balls for about 30 minutes, we returned to the room to enjoy having root beer floats.
The root beer floats contain the three states of matter we had studied. The ice cream was the solid, and the root beer was both a liquid and gas.
Hopefully we will have a little warmer weather this week, but please continue to make sure your child has the proper cold weather gear for outside recesses.

Have an awesome week and kind regards,

Julie Brown
