Week 18

Weekly Greetings!

To start off with, there are some events and important information I want to make sure you are aware of. Hopefully, you got the note home last week about the Christmas Concert at 5:30pm this Tuesday. The students have been practicing in music for weeks and I am sure it will be an enjoyable program. As I mentioned last week, this week will be an enrichment week in our class, with numerous things surrounding the holidays. There will not be any spelling this week, but I will still be sending home nightly math and language homework through Thursday. On Friday, we will have a class party starting after lunch. If you can contribute a treat, please return the note attached to the parent letter. Finally, be aware that there is an early release on Friday and the students will be dismissed at 1:45pm that day.

Since I had misplaced my camera last week, and my letter last week had just one picture, I am making up for it this week. As you can see from the pictures to follow, the students continue to enjoy the sledding hill and the warmer weather as made the outside recess so much more fun.
On Tuesday, the students participated in the Scientist in Action virtual field trip through the AK Teach program. The students had an opportunity to listen to engineers about their jobs, and the Insight lander that is destine to travel to Mars in May.
Later that day, the students continued working on ways to better get along. After picking from a list of three encouraging words, they made a representation of themselves holding the words to add to our class board. The activity was followed by another weekly visit from the councilor to work on additional social skills strategies.

The class got instruction from Ms. Shauna on Wednesday, and then made festive paintings of snowmen to display for the Christmas Concert. We are so fortunate to have her volunteer and share her artistic gift with the class.
In science, we have been studying organisms and looked at the rolls Pill bugs and millipedes play in the ecosystem.  The students observed each organism, took notes, and drew a representation. Then they compared and contrasted the two. We will continue this unit this week using guppies, snails and plants.
As we close out our first semester, and 2nd quarter, I hope you all have a wonderful break filled with family love and memories. I will look forward to beginning the second half of our school year when we return on January 8, 2018 with rested and refreshed students.

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown
