Week 23

Weekly Greetings!

It is hard to believe that we are half way through January already! Our second week back after the break started with an assembly to recognized students with perfect attendance and honor roll. In the fourth grade, we had two perfect attendance students (pictured in the first picture), and four students on honor roll.
To conclude our look at what makes a good leader in Social Studies, we focused on Martin Luther King, Jr.  and the impacted he made in this world. The students then considered ways they may be able to make an impact to help others in the world. Each student made a poster for our Inspiration Wall that started with "I have a dream, that one day..." Many of the boys want to serve in the military, in addition to a number of other worthy dreams expressed.

Another project the class worked on this week was their entry for the US Fish and Wildlife Migratory Bird calendar contest. Tim Lorenzini from the Tetlin Refuge came to class to share the 2017 calendar and encourage the students to enter a poem in addition to a poster. I will be sending home the entry forms this week for both entries. Please sign the forms and send them back, I can get the students great work submitted.
This week on Wednesday, the class will join Denver Museum planetary scientist, Dr. Ka Chun Yu,  on a virtual tour through space. The virtual tour will start from the surface of the Earth, using stunning visualizations, Dr. Yu will narrate our tour into lower Earth orbit, fly past the International Space Station, beyond our familiar 8 planets, ice balls and asteroids, and into deep space. This will be an excellent way to start our next Science unit on the universe we live in.

Also, the Battle of the Books competition will be on Thursday from 10:00am to 11:00am in the Tok School library. From the 4th grade there are three teams competing, with three students in each team, that have been reading the books and practicing the questions.

Please remember to make sure your child has all their winter gear each day. I have a few pairs of gloves to loan out, just in case they are needed, but the gloves are being used regularly and two pairs have not been returned. Other than the gloves, students seem to have snow pants and boots for outside recess. As always, they will continue to go out down to 20 below.

I hope you enjoy your week!

Kind Regards,

Julie Brown
