Week 24

Weekly Greetings,

To start with, I would like to remind you that this is a short week for the students as Thursday and Friday will be teacher in-service days. I have modified my schedule to fit in the most important areas to cover in only three days. The student will still have homework Monday and Tuesday, but there will not be a Spelling test this week. It will still be important to practice the words being sent home, as next week will have some review words on the test. Furthermore, a number of the words are included in the weekly reading selection.

In addition, I will be sending home book order forms if you would like to purchase any books for your child. The quickest way for me to get the books to Tok is to place a phone order. So, if you could send in cash, or a check made out to me, then I can call the order in and use a credit card to move the process along faster. Please return your order by February 5, and then hopefully the books will be here by the middle of the month.

Also, I would like you to be aware that next Monday we will be having a celebration for the 100th day of school. Please send in a snack item that has been counted out for each child to have 100 pieces. If we have eighteen different items, then the items will be put together as a trail mix. That means 100 pieces of each item times 18 for each student as a special snack. Some suggestions are: raisins, Cheerios, peanuts, M&M's, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, pretzel sticks, popcorn, or any other small food you can think of that can be counted.  Now for a few highlights from last week!

We started off the week with all the fourth grade students receiving a brand new helmet from the "Helmets on Heads" program. The helmets were free, and part of a program to help young people stay safe while using ATV vehicles. A heartfelt thanks to Gary Adams, and his daughter, that organized the give away.
The class was able to participate in a virtual tour of the universe, as mentioned in last week's letter, through the Denver Museum of Natural History. It was a great way to start our Science unit on the Solar System.
On Thursday, the Battle of the Books competition took place. There were 9 students from our class that had worked at reading the assigned books. Many teams participated, and one of the fourth grade groups tied for third place.

Another event to be aware about for next week is the start of an elementary reading incentive program. Students will earn miles along the Iditarod Trail by turning in reading logs.  Their progress will be charted on a trail on the bulletin board in the 4th and 5th grade hallway.

Kick-off event  will be next Monday, February 5th at 2pm. A local musher will bring in a dog or two and give a motivational talk about reading.  We will also have a craft and snacks at this event.

There will also be several reading parties throughout the contest as listed to follow:
Read with Rover Week on February 5-9.  Sara Richards will bring in her dog to read with classes during their library time this week.

A Beach Party will take place on February 27 from 2:30-3:15 in the library.  Students will bring beach towels, summer clothes, and enjoy a tropical snack while reading to the sound of ocean waves.

Then there will be a simulated Slumber Party on March 7 from 2:30-3:15 in the library. Students will wear PJ's and bring a stuffed animal or blanket.  They will enjoy teddy grahams and milk while reading.

The Grand Finale will be with local musher Hugh Neff, who will come and give a slideshow about the Iditarod and hand out prizes to the winners.  If timing doesn't work out, we'll have another assembly to hand out prizes, and have Hugh come after Spring Break.

Prizes for the incentive program will be:
The winning class will get to go mushing and on sled dog rides with a local musher and a pizza party at Fast Eddy's.

First class to the halfway point will get Mini vials of gold and a Gold Digger Sundae party

Individual prizes for most hours read by single students will be:
First place: $50, 2nd, $30, 3rd, $20.  Plus, medals and mini trophies for all participants will be awarded.
I will keep you posted as the addition activities progress starting with next Monday.
I hope you have a glorious week.
Kind Regards,
Julie Brown
